My name is Malika G.! I am currently an elementary school teacher in the Houston area! My passion is teaching and working with kids. I have tremendous experience with children. My first job was a swim instructor where I gave swim lessons to all ages. I then became a Dance Instructor where I taught Bollywood dance to children ages 5-15. I was also a Montessori teacher for 2 years and was responsible for children ages 0-5 years. In addition to all of this, I am the eldest out of my cousins and siblings in my family and have pretty much taken up responsibility of helping care for them since a very young age. I look forward to helping your child achieve your academic goals and am excited to see how much they can learn and grow! :)

I am a former educator who strive to create an educational environment that is welcoming, supportive, and nurturing to my students. Student-centeredness is very important to my teaching approach so that I can cater to the academic needs of my students. For three years, I taught History, Political Science, and International Relations. Moreover, I tutored students in English, History, and Political Science at elementary school and college level. I am currently employed as a Student Tutor at the Texas A&M University- San Antonio: Jaguar Tutoring & Writing Center. I have been employed as a campus writing tutor as of September 2016. As a tutor, I have assisted students with their writing skills across various disciplines. I have experience with helping students create lesson plans for education courses as well as writing lab reports for Psychology and Biology classes. I have also proofread dissertations and thesis statements for Graduate courses in Business and English. I have had numerous tutees from Criminology, Sociology, History, and Statistics courses. I am familiar with MLA, APA, ASA, and ACS formats. I frequently apply "the writing process" to tutoring sessions along with many other valuable resources and handouts in order to best accommodate the students' needs. The Jaguar Writing Center has provided all writing tutors with free handbooks, worksheets, strategy pages, and writing manuals to read through and utilize during tutoring sessions. Last summer, prior to being hired on campus, I created a handout for brainstorming and free-writing, which has helped students kick-start their ideas. Creating a "mind-map" and applying the steps of "the writing process" is an adequate method of presenting ideas in a well structured paper.

HERE ARE SOME OF MY PAST EXPERIENCES- I HAD A STUDENT WHO JUST GRADUATED FROM HARVARD UNIVERSITY. WHEN SHE WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, I HAD TUTORED HER FOR FOUR YEARS, JUST ONCE A WEEK. SHE FINISHED GENKI 1 AND 2 (AP JAPANESE LEVEL) WITH NO HIGH SCHOOL JAPANESE CLASSES AND SHE WAS PLACED IN A THIRD YEAR JAPANESE CLASS IN HARVARD. SHE WAS THE ONLY FRESHMAN THERE. I HAD ANOTHER STUDENT, WHO BARELY PASSED THE FIRST YEAR HIGH SCHOOL JAPANESE. I STARTED TUTORING HIM WHEN HE STARTED SECOND YEAR, TWICE A WEEK. HE ENDED HIS SECOND YEAR WITH A B+. I HAD ANOTHER STUDENT WHO HAD STUDIED JAPANESE FOR TWO YEARS WITH ME WHEN HE WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. WHEN HE STARTED HIGH SCHOOL, HE SKIPPED JAPANESE I (FIRST YEAR) AND STARTED WITH JAPANESE II. AFTER A WHILE, HE GOT BUSY WITH OTHER ACTIVITIES AND HE HAD STRONG FOUNDATION (ACCORDING TO HIS FATHER), SO HE DECIDED TO TAKE A BREAK FROM JAPANESE TUTORING. I WAS HAPPY FOR HIM. A YEAR LATER I GOT AN EMAIL FROM HIS FATHER, SAYING “GOOD MORNING, CHIYO! IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME, HOPING YOU ARE WELL AND HAPPY! I AM NOT SURE IF YOU ARE STILL IN SAN DIEGO OR HOME IN JAPAN, BUT XXXX IS HALF-WAY THROUGH HIS AP JAPANESE YEAR, AND WILL NEED SOME HELP FOR THE AP TEST. IF YOU ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE TUTORING, WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU AGAIN. AND IF YOU ARE NOT AVAILABLE, CAN YOU RECOMMEND SOMEONE JUST LIKE YOU?” I WORK WITH ADULTS, TOO. I USED TO HAVE A CLASS AT SONY (UNFORTUNATELY, MY VAIO PEOPLE ARE GONE). I TAUGHT TWO CLASSES A WEEK AND AFTER A YEAR AND A HALF, FIVE STUDENTS TOOK THE “JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST” AND ALL OF THEM PASSED THE BEGINNER LEVEL. IF YOU ARE WORKING FOR A JAPANESE COMPANY, BEING ABLE TO COMPREHEND AND COMMUNICATE IN JAPANESE IS HUGE PLUS!!
