I take great pride in being a lifelong learner. Since early childhood, I have benefited from the good fortune of being around others who have inspired me to learn by wondering about the world around me. When I first meet your student, we will spend a few minutes talking about what they are studying, what is challenging them in that course, and what interests they possess. Every aspect of our culture from entertainment to the sciences has a story. Helping a student focus on those stories can provide them the boost they need in subjects like History, American Government, and several others across the typical, 6-12th grade social students curriculum. I also have spent more than 20 years working as a broadcast journalist, taking complex informational chaos, and transforming it into informative conversation. If you are struggling as a writer or public speaker, I can help build your confidence. No matter what subject I assist you with, I intend to help you grow as a critical thinker. Almost every subject we encounter in school and every challenge in life requires the essential art of critical thinking.
In my past tutoring experiences, I have worked with student who are worried about being sent to summer school because of a looming F, only to have them raise their grades to Bs and As. For many of them, I have witnessed them develop a keener interest and mastery of a subject that once made them feel isolated, intimidated, and terrified. Let me help light your path through a touch class.

Experienced Online English/Writing Coach and Tutor
Students from 6-18 years have benefited from my in-person and online tutoring since 2018. It’s been my joy to support them with homework, test prep, reading comprehension, grammar, ESL, and test prep including SAT. I’ve also helped those with ADHD. My love of writing began in high school as the editor of San Francisco’s Cathedral High School newspaper. It continued throughout my higher education at San Francisco State University--ultimately leading me to become a published author. I am also a professional editor and writing coach.
I am not just an English/writing tutor, but I studied leadership development, communications skills, time management, and emotional intelligence for years and I taught these and other skills to adults in the SF Bay Area for 20 years. As a private tutor, I bring all these acquired talents to my online tutoring.
What is my philosophy?
Mistakes are opportunities for learning and change, they help us, rather than hinder us. I encourage rather than discourage while seeking creative solutions to problems or issues encountered in the learning process. Excellence is accomplished by practice, hard work, cooperation, communication, support, and a bit of grace!
Personalized online tutoring can produce great results! The experience of working with a private tutor can be amazingly productive! I can help with homework, essay composition, public speaking, SAT and test preparation, ESL, ADD and ADHD issues. As a writing and English tutor, I use a combination of Google Docs and Zoom or FaceTime or just phone conversations with Google Docs. I love to be of service to parents and their children, as well as being a trusted resource for teachers and school counselors.
The Simon Family Testimonial
My two boys (ages 10 & 13) have been working with Polly twice a week via Zoom since April. Polly is caring, kind, flexible, and calls upon them to be their best selves. She has been working diligently to find gentle ways to overcome their resistance to writing. I love that she has a different approach for each student, and does research to find materials and methods to bring out their interests and motivation. We feel very lucky to have found her. She cares deeply and it shows!

Dear Parents,
Thank you for your interest. Below is an overview of my reading intervention and ISEE prep programs.
READING INTERVENTION
I work one on one with students two times a week with each session lasting one hour. Before starting, I conduct an assessment which takes up to an hour and a half to assess fluency and comprehension as well as strengths and weaknesses and any possible learning issues. After tallying all the scores and going over my notes, I put the findings in a 4-5 page report. This report serves me as a guide in creating a program conducive to student’s specific needs. The intervention programs are between 14 and 18 sessions long (7-9 weeks).
The sessions are composed of several sections with more focus on those areas that are lacking the most. For example, if the student reads with low fluency more emphasis is placed on bringing the fluency up, and as the fluency improves, more emphasis is given to comprehension. If the student reads with high fluency, we focus on different aspects of comprehension.
I work my students hard, and they are usually tired after each session, but I also make it fun, and they do enjoy it. During each session, I find ways of boosting their self-confidence which helps them become confident readers.
My approach is goal oriented: I don’t believe in working with a student for an entire school year just to keep her head above the water. My goal for the students is to bring them up to a certain level of reading fluency and comprehension. For that reason, I create individual reading intervention programs for each student.
ISEE Prep
I start with an assessment which takes about 3 hours. I administer the practice test by simulating actual testing situation, collect additional information from the student and put all the findings in a 5-6 page report. Based on the findings, I create the prep program for each student with more focus on those areas that need the most improvement. The prep program is usually 15 to 18 hours long. After we finish all the sessions, I administer another practice test.
Each session is 1 . 5 hour long. In terms of math, I cover all the content and the types of questions that the student will encounter on the actual test. I also work on test taking strategies that are best suited for ISEE. In my experience, majority of students run out of time on math sections during my initial assessment, so I make sure that does not happen on the actual test. We do timed exercises for the students get used to working with time constraints.
As for language arts, I do reading interventions throughout the school year, so I have a lot of different tools I can use to improve student’s score.
