John Burroughs High School | St. Louis | - | 2022 |
When I instruct students, I personalize the lesson around what they need improvement in, but I also try to incorporate the topics they are talented in and enjoy. This way, they won't be discouraged by an overly intense focus on what they do not understand, and will be encouraged to enjoy the subject. Regardless of whether I teach English or Mathematics, I don't think I can do it well if the students feel forced to learn. I strive to make classes engaging, relatable and fun so that the students care about what they are doing. When I teach a mathematical concept I want to teach students why those concepts work, not only how they work. They should understand the applications of the concepts and how they tie in with other topics they might study in the future. This will hone their critical thinking skills and make them better at math, rather than better at following a set of steps. Regardless of what I'm teaching in English, I like to have the students practice writing. Incorporating grammar into writing will make them understand grammatical rules better, improve their reading comprehension skills and set a good foundation for developing persuasive writing skills in high schools. Another great way to improve English Skills is to read more, so I will look for books I think the student will learn from and enjoy. I will assign homework if the student wants it. My students are welcome to email/text me outside of class, and I would share my phone number and email after we started classes together. First class free :) |
