Dear Parents,
Thank you for your interest. Below is an overview of my reading intervention and ISEE prep programs.
READING INTERVENTION
I work one on one with students two times a week with each session lasting one hour. Before starting, I conduct an assessment which takes up to an hour and a half to assess fluency and comprehension as well as strengths and weaknesses and any possible learning issues. After tallying all the scores and going over my notes, I put the findings in a 4-5 page report. This report serves me as a guide in creating a program conducive to student’s specific needs. The intervention programs are between 14 and 18 sessions long (7-9 weeks).
The sessions are composed of several sections with more focus on those areas that are lacking the most. For example, if the student reads with low fluency more emphasis is placed on bringing the fluency up, and as the fluency improves, more emphasis is given to comprehension. If the student reads with high fluency, we focus on different aspects of comprehension.
I work my students hard, and they are usually tired after each session, but I also make it fun, and they do enjoy it. During each session, I find ways of boosting their self-confidence which helps them become confident readers.
My approach is goal oriented: I don’t believe in working with a student for an entire school year just to keep her head above the water. My goal for the students is to bring them up to a certain level of reading fluency and comprehension. For that reason, I create individual reading intervention programs for each student.
ISEE Prep
I start with an assessment which takes about 3 hours. I administer the practice test by simulating actual testing situation, collect additional information from the student and put all the findings in a 5-6 page report. Based on the findings, I create the prep program for each student with more focus on those areas that need the most improvement. The prep program is usually 15 to 18 hours long. After we finish all the sessions, I administer another practice test.
Each session is 1 . 5 hour long. In terms of math, I cover all the content and the types of questions that the student will encounter on the actual test. I also work on test taking strategies that are best suited for ISEE. In my experience, majority of students run out of time on math sections during my initial assessment, so I make sure that does not happen on the actual test. We do timed exercises for the students get used to working with time constraints.
As for language arts, I do reading interventions throughout the school year, so I have a lot of different tools I can use to improve student’s score.

Featured Review: Great Tutor with extreme patience and creative thinking!! "Curtis is extremely patient and did an incredible job connecting with my daughters. He is very thorough and easy to work with and goes out of his way to be available when needed. He has a well-structured approach that considers their individual needs. He explains problems clearly, quickly identifying where help was needed most, and developed constructive strategies for success. They both really enjoy him and actually look forward to their SAT review sessions! We are very happy with our choice of a tutor!"

About Curtis E:
Within the first two weeks of his sophomore year at Phillips Academy, Andover, Curtis was one of the few students to pass out of the year-long Competence (in writing) requirement. He then continued to stand out in all the English classes meant for juniors and seniors, often receiving the only A+ in the section. Curtis caught the acting bug in college and graduated with a degree in Performance Studies from Northwestern University. Ultimately, however, he felt the pull towards the greatest show on Earth: education.
Apart from teaching and tutoring English standard and honors classes at Somerville High School for seven years, Curtis also teaches SAT and ACT Prep, MCAS, theatre, and public speaking. In his time there and with other organizations, test scores and rankings have skyrocketed.
As a tutor and teacher, Curtis works to student strengths while developing areas that need improvement; he is a firm believer that every student can learn. A literature analysis and writing stickler, he works hard to improve skills and ensure college readiness. Curtis' energy and sense of humor make his sessions popular- he portrays academics in a fun light, akin to what he calls the "mental and spiritual gym" where one learns how to learn while maintaining a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
When not working in education, Curtis continues to pursue acting and is currently penning two screenplays. He loves tennis, guitar, cooking, travel, and, most of all, making his wife and kids giggle.

I've been a private tutor for the past 15 years and spent a year training as a Princeton review educator when I was a student at Princeton University (I graduated from the university in 1994). I work with students from kindergarten to adulthood and enjoy tailoring my approach to address each student's concerns and goals. I frequently look to have my students play an active role in uncovering the strategies that works best for them, thinking of them as a member of a two person team. I strive to have my students, whatever age, feel both supported and challenged during our sessions while giving them the tools to feel confident when I'm not around.
